- Calcium phosphate (mono-, di-, and tribasic; MCP, DCP, and TCP) is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) under 21 CFR 182.1217 and 182.8217 as multiple purpose food additive and nutrient when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice.
- DCPD is used as a leavening agent in bakery products with a high set temperature such as cake and muffin mixes with high sugar contents. A slightly alkaline phosphate, DCPd releases acid at 135°F to react with sodium bicarbonate late in the baking process.
- DCPD can be used for fortification as a calcium and/or phosphorus source in a wide variety of foods and beverages.
- Calcium Phosphates (Mono-, di-, and tribasic) are allowed as ingredients in or on processed products labeled as ‘organic’ or ‘made with organic’, according to 7 CFR 205.605(b)-U.S. National Organic Program.
- Mono-, di- and tricalcium phosphate have specific approval as components of coatings used on food contact surfaces of packages in 21 CFR 175.300.
- Calcium phosphate and calcium hydrogen phosphate are classified as stabilizers when migrating from food-packaging surfaces in 21 CFR 181.29.
- Calcium Phosphate (mono-, di-, and tribasic: MCP, DCP, and TCP) is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) in animal foods under 21 CFR 582.1217 and 582.5217 as a general purpose food additive, nutrient, and dietary supplement when used in accordance with good manufacturing or feeding practices.
