- Key Properties
- Sequestration: The phenomenon of binding metal ions in soluble complexes, thereby preventing the formation of undesirable precipitates or the occurrence of other detrimental side reactions. SAPP will combine with metal ions to form soluble but undissociated complexes, which remain in solution in the presence of precipitating anions.
- Buffering: The ability of inorganic phosphates to provide the desired pH level and maintain the proper alkalinity in solution. Although SAPP is too acidic to show any free alkalinity, it is equal to tetrasodium pyrophosphate in buffering capacity.
- Deflocculation: the process by which aggregates of particles are broken up into individual particles that are then dispersed throughout the solution such as the dispersion of clay mixtures in paper coating, drilling muds in oil well operations, slurries in cement manufacturing, etc..

- Product Applications
- Acid Metal Cleaners: Acid metal cleaners are generally used in the removal of mill scale, rust and other metallic oxides or to remove traces of alkaline residues. SAPP is effective in dry cleaner formulations where mild “controlled” acidity is advantageous and cleaning requirements are less demanding.
- Iron Phosphatizing: SAPP is commonly used in cleaner/phosphatizing formulations to reduce the formation of sludge. Control of sludge effectively extends the life of a phosphatizing bath.
- Drilling Muds: In oil well operations, SAPP is used to treat water-based drilling muds to produce high density fluids with specific flow properties.
- Dairy Cleaners: Dry formulated products containing SAPP provide mildly acidic solutions, which are useful in dairy operations to remove “milkstone.”
- Pigment Dispersant: Condensed phosphate deflocculants are used in water-base paints to aid in the wetting and even dispersion of pigments in formulating the final product.
- Potable Water Treatment: ICL Specialty Products Inc. sodium acid pyrophosphate conforms to the requirements of ANSI/NSF Standard 60. Used for corrosion & scale control and sequestering.
