Product Applications
  • Boiler Water Treatment: MSP is used for boiler water treatment where it softens the water by precipitation of calcium ions, thereby preventing scale formation. It also serves to adjust the pH of the water. DSP, however, finds greater application in this area.
  • Metal Cleaners: MSP is used in metal cleaning solutions where mild acidity is advantageous, such as those used for the removal of light rust or lime scale. MSP is excellent for formulated metal cleaners due to its ability to absorb liquid surfactants and remain free flowing. It can thus be used to formulate dry products, which can be easily and rapidly dissolved to make up cleaning baths.
  • Metal Phosphatizing: Phosphatizing baths containing MSP are used to deposit uniform thin coatings primarily on iron or steel; although zinc and aluminum surfaces are also phosphatized. MSP acts as a pH control and buffering agent to maintain the bath in the 4-5 pH range where the most effective precipitation of an insoluble phosphate salt occurs on the metal surface. Other phosphatizing solutions are often made directly from phosphoric acid.
  • Electroplating: Electroplating baths use MSP for pH control due to is buffering capacity.
  • Dairy Cleaning: Mildly acidic solutions are used in dairy operations to remove “milkstone.” MSP is often used to prepare dry formulations, which can be quickly dissolved for this application.
  • Textile Cleaning, Finishing and Dyeing: MSP in combination with other orthophosphates can be used for pH control. MSP is also an efficient reduction and exhaustion agent when dying with dark sulfur colors.
  • Potable Water Treatment: ICL Specialty Products Inc. monosodium phosphate conforms to the requirements of ANSI/NSF Standard 60 and meets or exceeds ANSI/AWWA Standard B504-88. Used for corrosion & scale control.
